The Betrayal, Trial, and Condemnation of Christ
John 18: 1-40.
In Matthew 16:13-16, Our Lord spoke of His church to be revealed in the not-too-distant future. As He completed His statement on the church, He began to show unto His disciples how that He must go unto Jerusalem, suffer many things of the elders , the chief priests and scribes, be killed, and be raised again the third day. Matt. 16:21. As we consider this as the basis upon which our salvation rest, and which is the fundamental truth of the Christian faith, we can mediate on his suffering for us, in view of:
The Deception of Judas
The Delivery of Christ
The Denial of Peter, and
The Decision of the People.
1-The Deception of Judas: The Chapter begins with the words-When Jesus had spoken these words, that is the words in chapter 17, his prayer, then He went forth with his disciples over the brook Cedron. Judas knew of the place where he would find an opportunity to carry out his pre-arranged mission with the chief Priests Vs. 2-3,5, Ref: Matt. 26: 14-16, 47-49.
2-The Delivery of Christ : Jesus therefore knowing all things that would come upon Him, went forth and said unto them: Whom seek ye, they said Jesus of Nazareth, Jesus said I am he: Vs. 4-8. Then they took Jesus and led Him to Annas, to Caiaphas, to the Judgment Hall, Vs. 12-14, 28.
3- The Denial of Peter: Peter is seen to have been zealous for the Lord, he had cut off the ear of Malchus, the servant of the high priest, Vs. 10, but now he came in contact with the damsel that kept the door with the servants and officers, they were then identifying him with the one they had now arrested, even Jesus Christ. Peter now denied his Lord Vs. 15-18, 25-27, but Jesus had prayed for him, Satan hath desire to sift you as wheat, but I have prayed for thee. Luke: 22:31-32.
4-The Decision of the people: Pilate who found no fault in Jesus, left it to the people to make the decision. The choices were Jesus the holy and innocent one or Barabbas the murderer. Which? they chose Barabbas. Today He wants us to make the right choice by choosing Him as our Saviour and to be a follower of Him. The song writer said:
Jesus is standing in Pilate's hall,
Friendless, forsaken, betrayed by all.
Hearken what meaneth the sudden call:
What will you do with Jesus.
What will you do? what will you do?
Neutral you cannot be,
Some day your heart will be asking,
What will He do with me?
