The Atonement of Christ
Sermon #2 Roman 5:1 & 11b
Therefore being justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord, Jesus Christ Vs 1, by whom we have now received the Atonement , Vs 11b . What is meant by the Atonement. Atonement means to cover, to pacify, to propitiate or meeting the just demand. The word occur 16 times in Lev. 16. On that day Aaron the High Priest brings a bullock for a sin-offering for himself and his family, he will kill that bullock, take the blood and sprinkle it seven times with his finger on the mercy seat, burn on the brazen alter the fat and the kidneys, and the whole bullock shall be carried forth without the camp into a clean place and be burned on the wood with fire, where the ashes are poured out. Lev.16:3,11,CF. 4.4-12.
Aaron shall also take from the people two goats and present them before the Lord, and shall cast lots, one for the Lord and the other for the scapegoat. Lev. 16.7. He shall take the goat upon which the Lord's lot fell, offer it for a sin-offering, by sprinkling the blood on the mercy seat and do as he did with the bullock. The other goat will be brought forward, Aaron shall lay both his hand on the head of the victim, confess over him all the iniquities of the children of Israel, and all their transgressions in all their sins, putting them upon the head of the goat, and shall send him away by the hand of a fit man into the wilderness, and the goat shall bear upon him all their iniquities unto a land not inhabited, and shall let him go in the wilderness Vs 21-22.
Therefore on the Day of Atonement we see (1) The sprinkling of the blood on the mercy seat, as the propitiation of meeting the just demand for their sins at the place where God had said He will meet with them. Exodus 25:8,21-22. (2) The carrying away of the sins of Israel into the wilderness, a place of forgetfulness.
In Romans 5.11 we read " we have now received the Atonement". In Hebrews 13.11-12 we read," For the bodies of those beasts whose blood was brought into the sanctuary by the high Priest for sins are burned without the camp, Wherefore Jesus also suffered with the gate. C F Heb. 9: 11-14,24. 1st Peter 1:18-19, 2:22.
He Sprinkled with His blood, the mercy seat above,
For justice had withstood, the purposes of love,
But justice now withstand no more ,and mercy yield its boundless store.
